XL Poisoned Meat: The Story of a Political Betrayal

he most basic contract of governance in a democracy goes something like this. The people who vote do so with the understanding that no matter what party they vote for among those wishing to govern, the voters do so as part of bargain. The trade is that if we elect you, pay your salary, and pay for the means to govern, you in turn will represent our interests, protect our rights under the law, protect our health where possible and keep us safe from those who would poison our food, our water, abuse our children or invade our homes and communities.

Unless you promised us otherwise during an election campaign, we can assume that your government will do these basic duties. That is the Democratic deal.

It follows that if after we elect you, you decide to hand over to the food industry the regulation and health standards required for our food supply safety then you must have committed a very serious breach of trust with the electorate. To start with you have created a horrendous conflict of interest, in which the food processing corporation, who never claimed their main goal was philanthropy, is forced to find a balance between profit making and the cost of food safety. We pay taxes and we already agreed to pay for the protection of our food supply. We did not ask nor expect this safety obligation to be put into the hands of the supplier. Nor did we hear any public debate on the virtue of such a decision. Nor did we vote in a referendum that would alter this tradition of government protection of the food supply.

During the election this Canadian government did not warn us that it wanted to win power to govern by means of the ballot box only in order to gradually eliminate government itself. This Conservative government must have secretly intended to use its power to make government disappear, to abdicate from Federal oversight and responsibility. It did not announce that if once elected it was determined to serve the interests of an oil Cartel, or a Food giant corporation, or the biggest Pharmacorps in the world. They did not tell voters that they intended to break and destroy the sacred contract between Democratic voters and Democratic governments.

It is not clear to me how the Minister of Agriculture can justify closing down XL MEATS when he has told the voters of this country that there is no problem. He has said that he is eating meat without concern. He has said that the consumer must be held responsible for poisoning himself. If food is burnt enough or boiled enough or radiated enough people will not get sick from it. It must surely be the same for water. Put enough chlorine in it and drink it “safely”, or avoid swimming at public beaches anywhere, or cut down all the trees and avoid power outages, or don’t drive and so avoid accidents or auto recalls.

This government is determined to get out of the way of business and is committed to helping large corporations do whatever they want to do in pursuit of profit, with a massive and reckless lunatic disregard for any other interests on this planet. This seems horribly clear to me in everything this government does, but to change this crisis we are in as a democracy the electorate will need to realize the scale of the betrayal and deception implicit in how this government thinks and operates.

Fall Diaries, Oct 20th 2012

Brenda looked out of the window first thing this AM and saw two deer crossing the lawn.  This in itself is not very unusual but they have been scarce all summer and here they are now in October all over the area.

Time to put out compost today, so out it went.  Including some long suffering homemade pea soup. Now this soup sat on the front porch through many long cool nights, but not cool enough to prevent it going over the top.  In the winter, we use the outdoors as an extended fridge and things can last a long time.  This is more possible when using pressure cookers.  They seal hermetically and are supposed to remain sterile, but to my surprise there were bugs in the soup.  I gathered two huge armfuls of leaves that went into the compost bin first and then soup and peelings.  Then it struck me staring into this complex mess that there is something amazing about all this turning into earth, into the rich black mould that we put on the garden, not a trace of these repulsive individual ingredients showing up.  How does this work?  Is that how the original earth was formed?  I put this awe aside and made breakfast.

Two more mice invaders caught in traps and disposed of, traps reset.

Fall is also the time of Soccer in my background and today I watched Norwich City defeat Arsenal, for the first time at home since 1984.  A beautiful day in Carrow and the Canaries playing a level of soccer that surprised everybody.

Fall is also the time of poignant transition where the vibrant life of Spring and Summer morphs into aging and dying and we think about time and mortality.  Today I learned about a group of human wolves in sheep’s clothing called Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, what a monstrous concept.

These people who have the temerity to lie about who they are and to conceal the religions they represent, in order to control how other people should die, NO MATTER WHAT THEY WANT FOR THEIR END OF LIFE CHOICES.  The horror, the horror.  We don’t need to seek monsters in movies from Hollywood, or in a guide to Psychopaths, they are everywhere in public life controlling our personal life choices.  There is no possible tiny fragment of justification for these presumptuous ideologues dominating our lives.  Anyway go to this EPC website and judge for yourselves. For myself, when I want to die I want the right to do it with whatever resources are available and which resources must be legalized.

Diary of the Fall, Oct., 17th., 2012

This is precisely that time of year when the mice, who know a thing or two, look around outside and think about how much more pleasant the future would look from a berth inside my house.  It is entirely possible that mice are sharing this information otherwise how would they know from year to year to come looking for that berth in my wine cellar.  They don’t come in and wander round until they find this “cool” room, they come directly there from outside. I have caught two so far this fall.  The idea that mouse pioneer mice keep reappearing is not likely. Not all mice are pioneers.   If any food is vulnerable on the shelves mice will find will find it. My cool room will be a lot warmer than the potting shed or garage in month or two.

Yesterday,  tired of hearing me crunching Que Pasa corn chips, Brenda said I had to drive to the village for potato chips.  Luckily I did find two bags of Miss Vickies original kettle cooked chips and brought them back.  Good Thing!

On my way there I counted 8 deer grazing like domestic animals in two or three fields where they could still find grass.  Now these beautiful beasts stood like Greek statues and watched me carefully as I watched them.  Deer know nothing of Venison.  But at the village Esso where the chips were, there was talk of the impending Annual Hunt, and those guys know about Venison and expect to get some.  At the first sound of a gun those dear will be much harder to find.  Their best friend for life would be bad weather.  Freezing rain and lots of it; strong winds and bad visibility; enough discomfort to drive hunters back to their camps for a fire and rum and cases of beer and steaks and cards.  This is the fall back position that hunters love and a big part of why they come here.

The other thing is that the trees are still providing lots of cover because when the hunt begins there will be no more deer in the fields but deer hiding in deep woods in good disguise.

My trees are still full of leaves but our massive bass tree has been shedding leaves like crazy and now it is I admit is bit bare, but this is a giant tree.  About two years ago Brenda started to worry about the health of this tree.  We hired a guy from Mindemoya to give us a  tree assessment.  He walked around this tree.  He checked the bark.  He told us:  This is  very old tree.  To take this tree down would be hugely expensive. There is no  sign that this tree is dying because aging is not the same as dying.  This tree  has many years left to live.  Leave it alone.  It is doing well.  It is surviving.  Do not bother this tree. So we did not.  Why would I not identify with this tree?

Fall diary Oct 15, 2012

I woke up to the rain again and got up thinking of this:

O western wind when wilt thou blow,
The small rain down can rain;
Christ that my love were in my arms
And I in my bed again.

For centuries readers have speculated on who could have written this.  My choice is for some Medieval foot soldier sitting in appalling conditions waiting for battle on the border between Scotland and England in November and being completely miserable.  He was of course immensely talented with language, and I can only hope he felt better for composing his famous anonymous poem.  My condition is not nearly so bad, as I only left Brenda to sleep and got up so as not to wake her.  And the rain, while not “small” as Spring rain would be, is certainly today not huge, as it was on the weekend.

Why can’t we build a canal or a pipeline to carry flood waters from the Prairies in Spring to the drying up Great Lakes.  Hold on, it is not really crazy–after all they built the railway across Canada, and did kill that many Chinese, and then Hwy. 117, and do we need a bunch of US stealth Bombers to serve in US wars of pillage and piracy?  Don’t get me started…….oh yes, it was me that got me started… so don’t encourage me then.

We decided to make spaghetti sauce for winter without meat of course, instead of Chilli sauce which we don’t normally eat anyway. It begins with blanching piles of Tomatoes.  These are red because while waiting for the strength to bottle green tomatoes we waited so long they got fed up and turned red.  Oh, well the key to survival is adaptation, no?  I don’t know why they turned red.

Speaking of Pharma drugs as we were recently, it turns out that Statins, the anti cholesterol super drug that is prescribed for half of north Americans helps to create the condition of artery hardening that it is supposed to prevent.  If they don’t kill you by shipping jobs abroad, poisoning the meat, polluting the water, and stressing you to death with “heavy volumes” of calls and “unusual wait times” they will cure you to death with prescriptions that require prescriptions.

I think I’m going back to bed, as Apple is supposed to call me from technical support at 4:00pm.  Due to heavy volumes……..etc.,

Fall Diary, Oct. 14th., Manitoulin

Brenda was right by George, we got the green tomatoes yesterday just in time as today the rain is a steady pour reminiscent of Dicken’s descriptions of the rain in Lincolnshire in Bleak House.  Made us think of poor Lady Dedlock wandering around her huge mansion where all the windows seemed always obscured by streams of water, shutting her in with her guilt and despair. She might have tried putting up large amounts of preserves.

Today we are doing green tomato salsa which will  be sealed in jars along with memories of their growing and cooking, and all of which will burst out along with their fragrance during the winter.  It will help to reassure us that Spring will come again.

There will be a problem with the garlic though.  I was counting on some I purchased from Farmer Ken in Gore Bay but it seems he left them in the ground too long and now I sort through them many are marred by overripe markings that cannot be trusted.  If this rain keeps up it will be days anyway before I can get back in the garden. Today is the last sailing for the Ferry.  News is that if the Great Lakes keep shrinking the Ferry can’t operate without deepening the channel in South Baymouth.  Like a true islander it now seems to me that winter is signalled by the dry-docking of the CheChemaun more than by anything.

If the rain stops and the sun shines soon, I will be looking for more wild mushrooms.

There is no soccer on TV.  Pity!

Brenda feels a bit better today so I think the anti-biotic is kicking in.

Today makes me think of so many days in Birmingham, living in lodgings with the feed-it-a-shilling gas fire, studying with gloves on, making it hard to turn  pages, when the rain and gloom in the streets made the day and the evening one, and when the cheeriest place to be was in the pub with friends and a pint.  Climate must be why pub culture is so important in England and why pubs specialize in glass, glitter and lots of noise, at lease in big cities. Not to mention the spirits that come in bottles, like rum that tastes of Cuban sunshine and works better in northern climes and on freezing boats at sea than on the beaches where it originates.

Fall Diary, Oct. 13th., Manitoulin

Today is mild by our standards but the breeze is cool and along with the damp and drizzle makes a fire necessary for warmth and solace.

Brenda, dealing with an infection and the antibiotic drug for it, nevertheless wants to proceed with preserving Chile sauce made from our green tomatoes, so I volunteered to go to Gore Bay to find cinnamon sticks.  Of course, while there I picked up 3 dozen farm fresh eggs from Charlie’s Shell station, and some more Ontario organic cranberries that I raved about at our Thanksgiving dinner.  I make a Cranberry-Orange relish for the Turkey.  Cooked with maple syrup it is a treat.

On my return from town I found Brenda outside gathering the last of our tomato crop, so I helped her pick and  bring in about half a bushel of green tomatoes.  Lunch was delicious as B. made squash soup and I made fresh salsa using some Jalape? pepper and savouring the Organic corn chips from B.C. created by QUE PASA, easily the best I have had.  Look for them and enjoy with Salsa or Gaucomole.

I watched two cooking shows on TV while Brenda slept this pm.  One about stir frying was very good and the other about cooking lamb.  Apparently there has been big decline in consumption of lamb in Canada.  A lot of young people have no knowledge of it and think it is very exotic and weird.  We love Ontario lamb and are nearing the end of our last order grown and butchered locally.  Time to order another I guess.

Getting dark already now and it is only 4.00 pm.  I hear Brenda up so will go and put the kettle on.  Winter is coming, but having all our tomatoes in is a relief and soon I must plant next year’s garlic, using this year’s for our seed.
Keep warm and hopeful

Joseph

Canada: a story

The unrecoverable dispersal of natural resources wealth into the pockets of a few  super rich economic war lords, Dick Cheney, Warren Buffet, The owners of Esso etc., is no longer tolerable.  We as a country have been bought and sold by international oil interests.  This Federal Budget is a virtual confession of this situation.

Manufacturing is part of a National Culture.  Social services are part of a nation building culture, a quality of life in a particular place.  A  national broadcaster is a national cultural institution.  Environmental regulation is part of a national concern about quality of life in a particular area of the Earth.  Canada is seen and written into a narrative of our territory adjacent to the US as a resource base,  a rich hinterland of resources, principally oil and gas, and nothing else here matters.  Why should oil interests care about our quality of life?
“Things” can be made in China and the US and elsewhere.  Why bother with them here?  Why bother with a middle class here?  Why should Oil fund health insurance?  Why do they need to fund pensions?  The Oil interests want wage slaves to get the resource out of the ground and sent on its way in pipelines.  Wage slaves should work hard for a short time and then die and be replaced by other wage slaves.  And the least supportable of all groups claiming rights are aboriginals who failed to all die and disappear under the original colonial plan.

Learn this story.  Tell it at every opportunity.  This counter narrative is our only real defence.  Get this story out there.  Forward this to every person, party, union, interest group, workplace, family, email list that you can imagine or find.

I ask for not a penny.  In fact I resent their disappearance as being a gesture of arrogance about how pennies don’t matter any more.  Wrong.
The only opposition is a different story that makes sense and gives force to our actual experience.

Canada Coup

The takeover of Canada by the Oil Cartel, based in Alberta, strongly allied with the US Republican Party  becomes more clear every day.  The world’s richest corporations  do not want to govern and waste their time working hard to run Nations. There is nation building and then there is Resource Extraction. This kind of resource extraction that seeks to export raw material without adding value to asset, is a form of rapid impoverishment of nations without lasting compensations.  No infrastructure is left.  No educational  or cultural development accompanies such commerce. The most profit accrues to those who can move in, extract the asset, move out quickly and avoid paying for clean up.
There is no lasting benefit for the people who owned the assets, lived on the land where assets were located or worked on the extraction of the assets and were then cast aside with their  families. There are no governments to protect the interests of these people since any such governments were removed to be replaced by those who would serve the interests of the Corporate Resource seeking powers. These Corporations regard their selected governments as they would “bouncers” in a night  club they owned.  Their purpose is to silence opposition and dissent, clear away any regulatory requirements that might hinder or delay resource extraction thus clearing their paths to the resources,  their  extraction and their movement.  Part of this plan is to crush Labour Unions, lower wages, translate all social value into monetary terms and create a worshipful climate for the acquisition of wealth.
The first major step in any resistance to this is to end the dominance of Oil. This will take time.  The first stage is to create awareness. Get out this story. We must think about resisting the use of oil and gas, not as a money saving domestic budget but as revolutionary resistance.   Cut back in every possible way on using fossil fuels and all non-renewables.  Where  possible shop locally.  Avoid travel.  Use solar panels.  Share one vehicle; car pool, use public transit. Share information. We must all become revolutionaries.

The Mind

Occupy Wall St. must move to Occupy The Mind

The mind is the last frontier for freedom.

In the mind we can mount an effective opposition to tyranny be it in the streets, in the board rooms, in the market place or in the polling box.

The human mind is the birth place of story.

The fight is for our own minds and for the stories that will represent our own experience, our own values and our own survival.

This is the ground we must not give up.

Organize for your next Occupy The Mind Conference in a location near you.

Lies

A lie is a story unrelated to the Experience of the teller.

This does not mean that the experience of the story teller is to be understood as limited to personal, first hand encounters of events in real time.  Experience is registered in the body of a story organism in many ways, through language, learning, music, exercise, sounds, food, or images or any combination of these involving our senses, thoughts or feelings as story creatures.
A good example of a lie would be to claim credit for the release of a Canadian citizen from a foreign gaol when in fact the claimant never intervened to procure this release.
After the release the claimant merely attempted to gain public or political credit by implying, suggesting or describing activities that did not happen.  This falsehood would be a lie and known by the teller to be false.
Telling the truth about these events would sound something like: “In regards the release of Mr. Jones who lives in Winnipeg from prison in Paraguay we did not intervene or play any role in these historical events and have no story to tell about them.”
