Jokes about sexual assault??

On Tuesday 4th., of March, Ontario Today aired a phone-in show on the topic of whether it’s OK to joke about rape in Canada and at the U. of Ottawa, as in the hockey team. The good ole boys in Ottawa apparently went to Thunderbay and are accused of assaulting a woman there as part of their fun and/or for a joke. No one has yet reported whether the victim of the assault confesses to getting the joke. What astounded me was CBC’s not even noticing  the horror of not shocking themselves at the thought that their listeners might just think it fine to joke about rape.  They set up joking about rape as a possible point of view! Really?
I am a professor emeritus from the University of Waterloo and I can’t imagine, when I was teaching, tolerating any hint of such sexism in any setting in the university.  I gather the hockey team has now been suspended, but how dare it ever be imagined as tolerable that men get together ever again for recreational purposes with the University logo on their jersey, unless there is an absolute ban on their hate spewing about women. Posing the question about joking about rape as the program has done, surely reveals how serious this hatred of women is in our society.  Who can imagine making jokes about rape except people who do hate women?  Is it okay to make jokes about concentration camps? About shooting 14 year old girls who want to go to school?  This is a deeply sick society, in which it is assumed that a discussion, that tolerates this subject of joking about sexual assault, on the air waves of the public broadcaster, means we are tolerant beyond comprehension.  This is hate talk. It should be a crime.  There are hate crimes in Canada’s laws.  Why isn’t this hate crime?  Why should women be asked to tolerate this crime?
